What is it?
A new policy on faculty workload reporting has prompted a review of data collection processes. ITS is working with IT leaders across the campus to create a process and mechanism for collecting and reporting faculty workload data. All applicable schools will collect and submit workload activity for their faculty members to a shared platform. Some schools already collect the required information. Other schools will need to develop processes to start collecting the data to then submit to the shared platform. ITS will work with units to provide aggregation for the data and submit it to the Provost’s Office for use in a University-level report. The Board of Trustees must approve the 2024-2025 academic year report. The approved report will be shared with the UNC System Office annually, starting October 2025.
Why are we doing it?
- The UNC System Office has updated its policy on Faculty Workload reporting for all faculty across the UNC System schools to require that each school produce and send the report on an annual basis.
- The Provost’s Office has developed a Faculty Workload policy to provide guidance for departments and schools.
How does this impact our UNC community?
Faculty and Administrative personnel
Impacts for each department will vary depending on what reporting processes and tools they already have in place. Each department will need to develop a policy to comply with the UNC System Office and UNC-CH Provost’s Office Faculty Workload policies.
When is this happening?
The project is currently underway and the initial report, covering academic year 2024/2025, is due to the System Office October 2025.
Status Update:
In August 2024, HR proposed collecting faculty workload information using the Faculty module in ConnectCarolina. The project team concluded that this would be the most efficient solution, as it leverages existing technology and HR processes to submit the information. Consequently, this project is no longer necessary and has been cancelled. ITS will continue to provide Faculty Affairs and HR with any data and support they need to complete this effort.
