On the third floor of the North Student and Academic Services Building on south campus, ITS Tech Support Analyst William Allen provides a tour around the UNC-Chapel Hill Office of the University Registrar.
The visit includes stops in his own small office, the conference room and a tidy training room. Allen supports 79 computers, 35 printers and the IT needs of 49 people with the Registrar’s Office, including student users and temporaries. He’s worked for ITS On Site Support at the Registrar’s Office for two years, following 1 ½ years at the ITS Control Center.
Allen has recently replaced all the computers at the Registrar’s office. He’s also working on upgrading the conference room, which will gain a flat-panel TV, a touch-panel control system and wireless support, enabling users to project on the screen from laptops, smartphones and tablets without having to plug in. Allen is particularly enthusiastic about this project, which will be finished by year end.
“We’ve got all the equipment,” he said.
He balances working on that and other projects with the day-to-day support of computer hardware, software, printers and scanners.
Because Allen is right there, employees with the Registrar’s office come to talk to him or call him about a variety of equipment—whether it is his realm or not. He encourages them to submit an official Help ticket. Most importantly, he’s there on site as the convenient, helpful resource from Information Technology Services.
