Desktop Management Service – jamf PRO

Service Description

The Desktop Management Service (DMS) offers IT Departments an efficient, reliable and secure method for managing University owned Mac computers while minimizing departmental overhead expenses through the UNC shared and JAMF hosted jamf PRO product suite. ITS will create departmental sites, upload software packages, scripts, and customizations to the jamf software server (JSS) and provide technical support to IT Departments.

In addition to these functions ITS will provide the following:

  • ITS, in cooperation with JAMF and the UNC-Wide JSS admin team, will monitor the service for availability and optimal performance.
  • ITS will test packages, scripts and configurations submitted prior to uploading to the JSS.
  • ITS in concert with the Desktop Management Technical Committee will recommend best business practices for using the jamf PRO service.
  • ITS will communicate upcoming changes, upgrades, and service interruptions to all jamf PRO admins in a timely manner.

The core components of the jamf PRO service are:

  • Asset Visibility
    • Jamf PRO collects hardware and software inventory on each enrolled system every 24 hours, allows for custom data collection via extension attributes, hardware and software inventory searches, GSX integration for warranty status, and inventory reporting.
  • Software Application Delivery
    • Through the use of smart groups, policies and self-service, administrators can deliver applications, scripts, configurations, and printers directly to enrolled systems.
  • Software patch management (both built in MacOS and common third party applications)
    • Jamf PRO includes automated patch reporting for commonly used applications.

This service is currently restricted to all University owned MacOS and iOS devices.

Supported Environment/Services


MacOS devices – $11.25 per year; iOS devices - $6.00 per year. The services is billed annually in December. Departments need to provide a current chartfield string upon provisioning.
