  • Microsoft M365 Number Matching for MFA

Microsoft is moving to a more secure method of authentication that changes “Push” notifications. The new process for logging into Microsoft 365 gives you an auto-generated number to type into your device. Microsoft doesn’t have an exact switchover date, but the purpose of this project is to get campus ready before Microsoft acts. Pilot groups are currently testing the system. (“Number matching” means that when users go through an MFA Authentication, they see a number… Read More about Microsoft M365 Number Matching for MFA.

  • Neutral Hosting/Distributed Antenna System (DAS)

The Neutral Hosting/DAS initiative is a multi-year effort, funded by the DAS licensees (a consortium consisting of Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T), to provide reliable outdoor and indoor cellular coverage and capacity across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. This unique approach provides a common (shared) transport infrastructure for the cellular carriers.  Due to the complexities of system design, design approval and construction coordination, DAS deployment is a multi-step process requiring numerous phases. Wireless carriers are no longer permitted to deploy carrier-specific RF infrastructure on… Read More about Neutral Hosting/Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

  • New and Enhanced Phone Services

The University’s phone service is moving from Verizon to AT&T. When the University’s contract ends in 2023, Verizon is discontinuing the service we use. We now have the opportunity to evaluate other providers, save money and provide additional features that support mobile and remote work settings. The move affects all campus phone lines, such as fax lines, conference room phones and main lines.

  • New NIH Requirements for Identity Assurance

What is it? The National Institute of Health (NIH) is improving data security and is requiring stronger proof that a person logging into their system is who they say they are. The NIH uses the criteria defined in the REFEDS Assurance Framework to define levels of assurance. REFEDS, which stands for “Research and Education FEDerations,” is an organization that represents the requirements of research and education related to access and identity management. Why are we… Read More about New NIH Requirements for Identity Assurance.

  • Operational Excellence Reserve Capacity Phase

This project will provide students who are registering for classes with information about the number of reserved seats in a class, and who the seats are for.  Currently, students may see that a class is available, and then get an error message when they try to register.  This happens when the class hasn’t reached its’ capacity, but seats are set aside for specific types of students.   For example, there may be reserved seats for first-year… Read More about Operational Excellence Reserve Capacity Phase.

  • Operational Excellence Student Registration Changes

This project supported a new registration process for undergraduate students designed by the Operational Excellence Registration Changes committee. The changes provided more equitable and consistent processes for assigning registration appointments. They also provide more time to register to avoid causing conflicts for students who are in classes or working. The changes included creating a process to calculate the students’ enrollment day (block) and time, automating the creation of registration appointments, and automating the assignment of… Read More about Operational Excellence Student Registration Changes.

  • Password Reset Using Duo 2-Step Verification

Currently, when you set up your Onyen, you answer some questions about yourself. Later, if you ever forget your password, you can answer these questions to prove that “you’re you” and safely reset your password. This security model is no longer considered safe enough by the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), the NIH (National Institutes of Health), REFEDS (the Research and Education FEDerations group), and the University’s own Information Security Office. Current guidance… Read More about Password Reset Using Duo 2-Step Verification.
