On March 20 and 21, the CFE Showcase on Teaching will return for its 10th event. Held every year and a half for the past 15 years, the Showcase on Teaching celebrates teaching at Carolina and provides a unique platform for educators to exchange ideas and build connections with peers from a variety of disciplines.
The showcase is free to attend, but registration is required. This year’s showcase is a hybrid event, combining the convenience of virtual sessions with the richness of in-person interactions.
Whether you plan to join virtual or in-person sessions or both, make sure to register to secure your spot. Attendees at the in-person events on day two on Friday will enter to win a prize raffle and enjoy breakfast, lunch and refreshments throughout the day.
ITS Educational Technologies (EdTech), the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) and the Office of Arts and Sciences Information Services (OASIS) are co-sponsoring the event. Planning committee members include EdTech’s Thao Nghi Tu and Bob Henshaw, and Emily Boehm, Marissa Stewart, Kayla Shearer, Catherine Gihlstorf and Taylor Dockery from the CFE.
Sessions designed to engage

More than 40 presenters from disciplines across campus will lead sessions on a wide range of instructional topics and of-the-moment academic concerns. The program is designed to be relevant to all instructors at Carolina.
“We will feature sessions on the challenges of teaching large courses, as well as tough topics like approaching difficult one-on-one conversations with students. There really is something to learn no matter your teaching context,” Boehm said.
The Thursday afternoon sessions, forums on digital accessibility and campus opinions on artificial intelligence, will be held over Zoom. The Friday in-person events at the Student Union begin with breakfast at 8:15 a.m., followed by a full schedule of panels, teaching demonstrations, workshops, roundtable discussions, lunch, remarks from Provost Chris Clemens, a keynote address and a prize raffle.
Keynote will challenge assumptions

A highlight of the showcase will be the interactive keynote address by Kevin Gannon, Director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence and Professor of History at Queens University Charlotte.
His keynote, (Re)Connecting with Students, will invite attendees to consider strategies to cultivate and sustain motivation in students and instructors alike.
Keynote attendees will examine barriers to teaching and learning in a post-pandemic pedagogy era, reflect on why these barriers exist and brainstorm how to surmount them. He will also lead a guided discussion and reflection to inspire attendees to apply a pedagogy rooted in hope.
Attendees will also hear remarks from Provost Chris Clemens. Clemens will share his valuable insights into the University’s vision for teaching and learning. This session will be an opportunity for attendees to gain a deeper understanding of the strategic direction of the University and how it aligns with their own teaching practices.
