ITS employs more than 100 student employees in roles across the organization from tech support to social media marketing. ITS student positions offer valuable real-world work experience, and many positions offer flexible, remote and/or hybrid schedules.
Undergraduate and graduate students from all backgrounds and majors — not just the techy ones — can find their place at ITS and help ITS connect with all members of the UNC community. Peer support
When you think of the services ITS provides to campus, you likely picture technical support. While that’s only a part of how ITS supports the campus mission, tech support does represent the majority of student positions in ITS.
Units across ITS, including the Service Desk, Research Computing and ResNET, leverage student employees to provide first-line tech support to fellow Tar Heels.
At the Service Desk, student team members respond to help requests via phones, chat, web and walk-in services. Students work alongside full-time professional staff handling issues like troubleshooting laptops, Wi-Fi, software installation and printing.
Students who work for ITS ResNET provide hands-on tech support for residents of Carolina Housing. ResNET’s Residential Computing Consultants, or RCCs, live and work in the residence halls and give “house calls” to students who need tech help.

And student employees in Classroom Hotline support technology in 200 general-purpose classrooms. Classroom Hotline student workers visit each room to perform checks and routine maintenance to ensure classrooms are in good working order and ready for instruction.
Other ITS roles foster creativity, connect with community, build skills

In other units in ITS, students work a variety of roles from marketing to writing code.
ITS offers positions that help students grow in non-technical areas. In ITS Communications and ResNET, students flex their creativity and connect with the Carolina community by making content for social media, blogs, podcasts, videos and more.
In other units, like the Carolina Gaming Arena, the Information Security Office, Project Portfolio & Change Management, and the Digital Accessibility Office, student employees learn skills, both technical and non-technical, that are in high demand in the workforce.
Students employees add value to ITS
“Having the student workers allows us to stay in touch with our primary customer base — students,” said Patrick Kiernan, the Service Desk’s Team Lead for Walk-in Services.
“They know what’s going on in all their departments and clubs and what students want or don’t like about campus IT. I am constantly looking to them for feedback on ITS projects, and we utilize them for user testing on everything, like ConnectCarolina revamps or testing updates for TIM,” he said. TIM is short for the Time Information Management system.
“I think the students we have are one of the best parts of the Service Desk,” said Kiernan, who worked at the Service Desk when he was a student. “They are a constant reminder of how special Carolina is and why I never left.”

In their own words
ITS student workers learn real-world skills in a supportive, flexible work environment.
Student employees Natalie Gonzalez and Kate Chapman joined ITS Communications in 2024. In their roles, they create content that helps Tar Heels understand the ITS story.
“My teammates have all emerged as incredible mentors for me,” Gonzalez said. “This job has even made me feel more prepared and confident with my classes because all the skills that I’ve learned are transferable.”
“I feel like my job has equipped me with the skills that I will need to enter the workforce after I graduate,” Chapman added. “I’m really looking forward to continuing my college career alongside such a supportive and amazing team.”
