Kate Hash has been named ITS’ Assistant Vice Chancellor for Customer Experience & Engagement, effective March 16.

Hash has served as Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor of User Support & Engagement since February 20, 2019, overseeing IT Service Management (including the ongoing ServiceNow implementation), the IT Service Desk, Software Acquisition, ResNET and Managed Desktop Services.

Hash ”has demonstrated the ability to lead critical institutionally scoped projects, build consensus and engagement internally to her teams and externally with the campus community, assess and plan appropriate courses of action, and bring strategic efforts to completion,” J. Michael Barker, Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, wrote in his announcement to ITS.

Two units, one leader

In her new role, Hash will oversee two subunits of ITS: ITS User Support & Engagement and ITS Communications. Joining these two units under one leadership position aligns ITS Communications with the principal unit for end-user support in what is hoped will be an even more seamless IT experience for campus.

“The way we communicate to the people we serve is very much allied with the ways those people ask us for help or report a problem,” Barker said. “These two functions reach the broadest range of people — students, faculty, staff, visitors, parents — and set the tone of their experience of ITS and information technology at UNC-Chapel Hill.”

Prior to and during her interim role, Hash oversaw Communications, Policy, Digital Accessibility and Digital Services for ITS. In this role, she was responsible for internal and external relations, including communications strategy and planning for large IT projects for more than 45,000 students, faculty and staff, as well as oversight of the more than 17,000-site WordPress service operated by Digital Services. She will continue to oversee Communications, Digital Accessibility and Digital Services.

Character, temperament, intellect

Hash, Barker said, “has the qualities of character, temperament and intellect to help transform ITS into the information technology organization the University needs both now and in the years to come.”

Operated consulting firm prior to ITS

Before joining ITS in 2014, Kate owned and operated a digital communications and technology consulting company for five years, three of which were spent living and working in Florence, Italy. She has a passion for translating complicated IT and business needs into consumable information for end users and customers. Kate also previously worked for the University of Louisville and Hanley Wood LLC in marketing.

Kate holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The George Washington University and a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Louisville.
