Following the University’s migration to Microsoft Office 365, Identity Management is now responsible for a large code base involved with provisioning and self-service for Exchange, Office 365 and sharing directory information with the UNC Health Care Active Directory.

Here is a list of the Identity Management new functions:

Self Service: This project serves what is under the “Home” tab of https://selfservice.unc.edu/. Users can use this to sign up for email, request specific email aliases, etc.

Lyris List Manager: This project serves what is under the “ListManager” tab of https://selfservice.unc.edu/. Users can use this to sign up for specific listserv mailing lists.

Mass Email: This project serves what is under the “MassMail” tab of https://selfservice.unc.edu/. Administrators can use this to send out official emails to large groups.

WinTools: This project serves what is under the “WinTools” tab of https://selfservice.unc.edu/. Administrators can use this to troubleshoot issues with AD, Exchange and Office 365.

Office 365 Groups: This project serves what is under the “Office365Groups” tab of https://selfservice.unc.edu/. Users can use this to create groups within Office 365.

Provisioner: This is the back-end process that creates email accounts in Exchange and Office 365.

MIM Directory Sharing: Code related to the Microsoft Identity Manager Directory Sharing project that enables both the UNC Health Care AD and the campus-side AD to share entries in each other’s GALs for easier address lookup between systems.

Mass Mail Mailer: This is the back-end process that performs the mailing operations of the MassMail application.

Splunk to SQL (lockouts): This back-end process gets lockout data from Splunk and populates ITS_WSAPP_SPLUNK. UserLockouts.

Auditor: This is the back-end process that gathers and logs point-in-time data about users.

Web Services:

  • ExchangeAD: Provides access for Exchange administrators to make calls from PowerShell.
  • PhishHandling: Provides interface to Exchange for dealing with compromised accounts.

Identity Management is in the process of filling the position that will be primarily responsible for these functions. In the meantime, current Identity Management staff members are getting up to speed on and making needed modifications to the existing code.

Identity Management is also setting up a new testing environment for the group to be able to make changes in a safe environment without impacting production. The group asks for your patience during this transition and hopes to begin processing new requests more quickly in the near future.
