As you are probably aware, yesterday, June 9th, ITS experienced a significant degradation of email service. Teams have been working around the clock to troubleshoot and are working directly with the vendor on the issue.

What to expect today

Because fixes are still going into place to solve the issue, it’s likely that you may experience degraded email service today as well. Here are important facts to know about the service disruption:

  • We believe that no email has been lost and that all delayed messages from Thursday have now been successfully delivered.
  • If you cannot currently get into email, all of your messages will be waiting for you when full access is restored.
  • If you have sent email to someone who says that they did not receive it, please do not re-send until we notify that we are fully operational.
  • The issue is affecting all mechanisms for accessing email (desktop or laptop clients, Outlook Web Access (OWA), and mobile phones). That is to say, one access point is not better than another as degradation has been consistently reported across all.
  • Access to email has been and may continue to be sporadic. One of the above methods may be successful, only to fail on the next try.
  • This outage does not affect students.

How to stay up-to-date

  • Web: You can always learn the latest status by checking, status.its.unc.edu or the main ITS website, its.unc.edu.
  • Voicemail: By 9am a broadcast message will arrive in your voicemail inbox with an update. Please check your voicemail even if your “message waiting” indicator is not lit as broadcast voicemails do not trigger the message waiting indicator.
  • Twitter: The main ITS account, @UNCTarHeelTech, will be posting updates throughout the day.

The nature of these particular problems results in the technicians not being able to fully understand the effectiveness of the fixes until load on the system begins to increase throughout the workday – we will continue to troubleshoot as our data monitoring provides additional information. We apologize for any ongoing issues you may experience today.
