ITS Communication Technologies changed another 961 phone lines to the Voice-over-Internet Protocol system on Friday, July 24. That brings the number of phone lines converted over from the legacy AT&T Centrex phone system to 17,000-plus of the 20,000 in the multi-year project, or more than 85 percent.

The switchover last Friday was the 15th port of the VoIP project. The port included many buildings, including Taylor Student Health, UNC Public Safety, the cogeneration plant, the Friday Center, the Daily Tar Heel, the residence halls and some wings of the medical school.

Third port so far this year

The previous port of the VoIP project was April 29, when about 1,500 lines in 12 buildings were converted to the Verizon Business Hosted IP Centrex phone system. The other conversion this year was in February, when about 700 lines were changed at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In the next port, on August 27, 662 phone lines will convert in what will be the last big port of the project. At that point, around 18,000 phone lines will have been switched, said Cheri Beasley, Customer Services Manager with ITS Communication Technologies.

ITS is about to enter the fourth year of the VoIP project, but it includes primarily cleanup and porting on a much smaller scale. The conversion is expected to be finished next year.

What does this mean for users?

Faculty and staff who DO NOT currently have a VoIP phone need to begin dialing the full 10-digit phone number plus a “7” prefix when placing phone calls to these buildings (7 + 919 + seven-digit phone number).

Faculty and staff who DO have a VoIP phone will dial the 10-digit phone number (no 7 prefix), or the five-digit abbreviated phone number when placing phone calls to these buildings.
