Randy Marchany October 17 | 11 a.m. – 12p.m. | Global Fedex Building

ITS is pleased to welcome Virginia Tech’s Randy Marchany to campus as he speaks about cyber security preparedness and best practices on October 17th at our Cyber Security Town Hall.

“Randy is a recognized information security communicator, teacher, practitioner and expert. In addition, he has worked in higher education for decades” said Kevin Lanning, interim chief information security officer. “This is a great opportunity to bring in a respected voice from a fellow institution of higher education to talk about important issues in cyber security.”

Randy Marchany is a co-author of the FBI/SANS Institute’s “Top 10/20 Internet Security Vulnerabilities” document that has become a standard for most computer security and auditing software. He is also the co-author of the “Responding to Distributed Denial of Service Attacks” document that was prepared at the request of the White House in response to the DDOS attacks of 2000. He was a member of the White House Partnership for Critical Infrastructure Security working group that developed a Consensus Roadmap for responding to the recent series of DDOS Internet Attacks.

The town hall will take place on Friday, October 17th from 11a.m. – 12p.m. at the Global Fedex Building Auditorium, Room 1015. Discussion from Marchany will focus on “Preparedness” and how to implement 20 critical information security controls.

“With recent security breaches at well established institutions on the minds of many, technical and even some non-technical members of the Carolina community will find Randy’s comments regarding ‘Critical Information Security Controls’ an informative event to attend,” said Lanning.

All are welcome to attend this town hall and registration is not required.

The Cyber Security town hall is presented as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). To learn more about ITS’ additional NCSAM outreach initiatives, please visit its.unc.edu/ncsam.
