Smart Spaces

ACM Classification C.3

Physical spaces are increasingly outfitted with sensors and actuators that monitor and act upon the environment. These devices are increasingly networked and integrated with software systems that serve to orchestrate, resulting in "smart" spaces that adapt dynamically to suit current requirements.

As this trend continues, more and more opportunities arise to take advantage of these physical resources and incorporate them into the overall computing environment. Not only do these spaces become "intelligent," they also act as contributors to a newer generation of software. The physical devices are associated with computing resources of their own. For example, when associated with soft agents and participating in holistic agent-based IT systems, devices act as contributors of context, and in turn are manipulated accordingly by other agents that require certain realm resource configurations.
