Service Description


Full disk encryption is required for storage of University-owned sensitive information on laptops. Full disk encryption uses cryptography to protect a user’s data from unauthorized access in the event of device loss or theft.

Users/Customers

All users who store University-owned sensitive information on laptops and have an active affiliation with the University are eligible for this service.

Service Provisioning

Departmental IT groups can obtain the service by contacting the ITS Service Desk (see Technical contact information)

  • End users can acquire the service by contacting their local IT support.
Supported Environment/Services

The following products are supported:

Microsoft BitLocker

  • Deployment guidance for departmental IT administrators can be requested as described below.

Apple FileVault

  • Deployment guidance for departmental IT administrators can be requested as described below.

Symantec Whole Disk Encryption (PGP) for Windows

  • Deployment guidance for departmental IT administrators can be requested as described below. In addition, full 24/7 support for end users is provided as described below.
  • Symantec Encryption Desktop is supported on laptops running Windows
