Service Description
Blackboard is the campus learning management system centrally supported and hosted by ITS. It is typically used by instructors to build a secure site with tools and an easy-to-use template for courses related to a specific term.
Blackboard as been in use at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1999. Currently the Blackboard system at Carolina hosts over 23,000 students and 2,000 instructors.
Through Blackboard, instructors set up customized course sites that allow them to:
- Post course materials and resources
- Link to online assignments
- Email function for contacting all or selected members of a class
- Discussion board
- Student group areas
- with a discussion board
- file exchange tool
- text-based, real-time chat
- Gradebook for securely distributing grades to each enrolled student
- Assessment tools for giving quizzes and practice tests
- Securely reports grades on assignments
- Participate in online discussions
Blackboard sites can also set up Elluminate sessions within their Blackboard sites.

How Do We Charge
There is no charge for faculty and students.
How To Request More Information On Or Request The Service
If you've already logged into Blackboard and verified that you don't have access to the course site, then submit an Online Help Request.
If you'd like to request a Blackboard site for another purpose, you should submit an Online Help Request as well.
Student-led Groups
If you would like to request that a Blackboard site be created for a student-led group, that group's faculty-staff sponsor must place the request. Faculty-staff sponsors must also agree to be responsible for giving students appropriate access to the site.
