Research Computing offers a variety of Storage & Data Management services. To learn more about what Research Computing offers, please explore the services below:

Hardware

  • Long-term storage tape archive
  • IBM TS3500 tape library with 6 IBM TS1120 Tape Drives
  • Machine Name: stormy.isis.unc.edu, Sun Fire V880, 4 CPUs and 8 GB of memory for maintaining the SAM-FS

System Maintenance Guidelines

  • Maintenance will be scheduled and announced in advance with a Change Notice.
  • Unscheduled maintenance may involve little or no advance notice depending on the nature of the problem. An Emergency or Follow Up Change Notice will be issued as soon as possible.

Usage of Mass Storage System

Research Computing offers a secure ftp site which allows for both anonymous and Onyen-based user authentication. Anonymous users are allowed to upload data only, no downloading is allowed at this time by anonymous users. A University partner can login as “ftp” or “anonymous.” This feature is useful for University collaborators who have neither a UNC PID nor an Onyen but still require data-sharing capabilities.

  • Maintenance will be scheduled and announced in advance with a Change Notice.
  • Unscheduled maintenance may involve little or no advance notice depending on the nature of the problem. An Emergency or Follow Up Change Notice will be issued as soon as possible.

ITS Research Computing provides an Oracle database server and professional database administration services for research projects at UNC-Chapel Hill. Development, test and production instances of databases can be supported. The ITS Research Computing database administrator applies updates and patches to the Oracle environment on at least a quarterly basis, ensuring that your database environment is up to date and secure.

Hours of Availability

Production Oracle databases hosted by ITS Research Computing are typically available 24×7 other than during planned maintenance periods or unanticipated emergencies (such as loss of commercial power to the data center). As noted above, database instances are patched on a quarterly basis. Operating system updates and server maintenance also require scheduled down times. Test and development instances may not be available 24×7.
