Fall 2007 Tablet PC Student Pilot
Some say that the use of laptops in the classroom will lead to the demise of handwriting, but a new student pilot testing the potential impact of Lenovo X60 Tablet PCs could prove otherwise.
This fall, 25 students will receive a loaner Tablet PC for the remainder of the 2007-2008 academic school year and be required to participate in a basic orientation program, follow-up training sessions, regular blog postings and focus group meetings.
Beginning September 7, interested students can apply online at http://www.unc.edu/tablet to participate in this groundbreaking study. Applications close on Friday, September 21, at 5:00 p.m. Students selected to participate will be notified via e-mail between September 28 and October 5.
The pilot is part of ITS’ partnership with Student Government to form the UNC Tablet PC Research Group, which will explore the effect of tablet PCs on learning, organization and classroom participation. Tablet PCs, which are now available through the Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI), are laptop computers that convert into a ‘digital notebook’ by rotating the screen around and writing on it with a stylus.
