Research computing support returning to ITS
June 6, 2008 at 8:58 am | In Features, ITS Announcements, Research NewsSupport for research computing returned to Information Technology Services (ITS) effective June 1. Research computing had previously been under the purview of the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI).
In the short term, all current assignments and commitments made by RENCI will be continued by ITS and unaffected by the transition. Staff changes are not anticipated at this time.

Telecom R&D standard H.350.7 approved
February 7, 2007 at 8:17 am | In Features, Research NewsReal-Time Communications (RTC) technology developed by ITS Telecommunications’ Research and Development group has been formally accepted as an international standard in support of instant messaging (IM).
In November 2006, the proposed technology, Directory Services for XMPP, was put forward by the University of North Carolina to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Study Group 16, which handles topics associated with multimedia conferencing. Now, the ITU has formally ratified that architecture as an international standard in their capacity as the United Nations’ organization responsible for global telecommunications standards.

Upgrade puts Topsail among top 20 supercomputers worldwide
January 31, 2007 at 8:27 am | In Features, ITS Announcements, Research NewsAn upgrade of Topsail, the Dell research computing cluster at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will place it among the top 20 supercomputers worldwide according to the most recent Top500 computer rankings. Currently, Topsail has a computational capability of 6.252 teraflops. With the upgrade, Topsail’s computational capability will exceed 20 teraflops – more than 20 trillion calculations per second.
