ResNET ahead of the game
July 28, 2008 at 8:52 am | In Features, PeopleThree ITS employees recently attended the 15th annual Residential Networking (ResNet) Symposium at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Chris Williams, ResNET program director, Jeremy Buenviaje, ResNET assistant program director and Paul Kamen, ResNET web applications developer, spent three days networking with their counterparts who represented over 100 colleges and universities from throughout the United States and Canada.
Though the ResNET team did not present at this year’s conference, they were excited to hear that many institutions from across the country are following in their footsteps. In 2006, the UNC-Chapel Hill group changed its name from Residential Networking (ResNet) to Residential Networking, Education & Technology (ResNET) which reflected an increased focus on the technology education and broader technology support it provides to students each semester.
“At the symposium’s town hall event, there was a lot of discussion about the evolution of the ResNet program and how it doesn’t just focus on networking anymore,” said Williams. “For the most part, our group here at Carolina is ahead of the game.”
Through training workshops and networking, the team learned how other schools address topics such as copyright infringement and security, student programming and hiring and managing student employees.
The 2009 ResNet Symposium will be held at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn.
