Two ITS employees were recognized for their outstanding contributions to ITS and the Carolina community at a luncheon on Sept. 24.

Bruce Egan, manager of the ITS Response Center, was honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence and the State Employees Award for Excellence, the highest honor a state employee can receive. Joe Bray, applications specialist, received one of just two Excellence in Management Awards.

Bruce Egan

Called a visionary and an inspiration to his staff, Egan was cited for his devotion to his job, his co-workers and the University. In addition to his ITS duties, Egan founded and stewards the Carolina Family Scholarship, a fund designed to provide need-based scholarships to employees’ children attending any post-secondary public institution in the state of North Carolina.

According to Priscilla Alden, assistant vice chancellor for User Support and Engagement and Egan’s supervisor, Egan understands that the quest for excellence extends to serving not only your customers, but also your colleagues.

“I have personally seen Bruce extend a hand to those who are struggling with a personal crisis,” said Alden.

The Chancellor’s Awards were established in 1991 to recognize contributions made by University employees based on meritorious or distinguished accomplishments. Recipients receive a monetary award, a special leave award of 24 hours and a framed certificate, presented by Chancellor James Moeser.

The Chancellor’s Award winners also become the University’s nominees for the State Employees Awards for Excellence. Egan will receive the statewide award in the category of Public Service. He will be among 15 state employees honored Oct. 15 in a ceremony at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh.

Joe Bray

Joe Bray manages demanding projects and does it superbly. So says Bray’s nomination for the Excellence in Management award.

Known for masterminding the renumbering process for all University courses, Bray was also recognized for his skillful leadership and exemplary work on the general education curriculum requirements project.

Bray was cited for creating a strong, healthy work environment in which all members of his group grow professionally and personally and strive to do their best.

One nominator said, “Joe would tell you that his team makes you look good, but members of his team would tell you that it is Joe who has given us the savvy and the opportunity to excel.”

The Excellence in Management awards were established in 1998 to recognize accomplishments in management. Recipients receive a monetary award and a framed certificate, presented by Richard Mann, vice chancellor for finance and administration.
