Vulnerability alert: ITS asks users to update Symantec client

A type of malware that exploits Symantec desktop security products is attempting to compromise computers and computing systems at UNC-Chapel Hill. To protect your computer from this combined worm and botnet, all UNC-Chapel Hill users are asked to immediately update their Symantec client to the Symantec Antivirus 10.0.2.2002 version available for free at shareware.unc.edu.

ITS Information Security is isolating infected machines to attempt to limit the spread of the malware. Please protect your system as quickly as possible. Failure to protect the system may result in your machine being isolated as a potential threat to the network.

The following Symantec Corporate Edition versions have been confirmed as vulnerable and need to be updated immediately:

10.0.0.359
10.1.0.394
10.1.0.400
10.0.2.2000
10.0.2.2001
10.0.2.2010
10.0.2.2020
10.0.1.1007
10.0.1.1008
10.0.1.1000

Note that other versions might be vulnerable as well. The version at shareware.unc.edu is not vulnerable to this exploit.
