Volunteers Reed and Cadwell to pilot a month of Memex
August 28, 2006 at 7:57 am | In FeaturesDan Reed, vice chancellor for IT and CIO, and Suzanne Cadwell, computing consultant with Teaching and Learning, will participate in a 30-day TAP assessment of Microsoft’s MyLifeBits (MLB) software.
Both volunteers will use MLB Memex software to collect and review personal digital data during the 30-day period. Reed and Cadwell will each wear a SenseCam, a pendant the size of a cigarette packet that has sensors that collect data to send to MLB, during the day, after work and on the weekends. This pilot focuses on obtaining basic usability feedback, and Reed and Cadwell will report periodically on the TAP News blog about their experience with the system.
A more formal assessment process for use in the general student population is being developed by Abe Crystal, a SILS doctoral student and member of the Memex Metadata (M2) project.
UNC-Chapel Hill was one of 14 universities awarded MyLifeBits by Microsoft Research for its Memex Metadata (M2) for Student Portfolios Project—a collaboration involving TAP and the SILS Metadata Research Center.
