Carolina Technology Consultants (CTC) retreat Oct. 20

ITS is sponsoring this year’s Carolina Technology Consultants Retreat on Oct. 20 so that current CTC members may attend this annual event for no charge. The retreat, held on campus at Sitterson and Peabody Halls, includes multiple presentations lead by some of Carolina’s own technology professionals. Keynote: Disaster Prevention & Disaster Recovery
Judd Knott, Tom Morris, Dennis Schmidt
This keynote session will present information on the planning for the machine rooms in the renovated ITS Franklin and the new ITS Manning (Judd Knott); the School of Public Health’s implementation of Iron Mountain (Tom Morris); and School of Medicine OIS’s experience with the Living Disaster Recovery Plan System (LDRPS) (Dennis Schmidt).

UNC School of Medicine; Developing a Curriculum Management System using Plone
Charlie Hitlin
A case study presentation on how and why the UNC School of Medicine choose Plone as a development framework to replace an aging and manual system for a dynamic user centric CMS. The School of Medicine contracted with an outside development company, Cignex, to more quickly deliver a finished product just in time for fall classes. The presentation will highlight the implementation process and cover an in-depth post mortem of the lessons learned.

Spyware Class
Andrew Lee, Alan Forrest
A systematic overview of spyware and a recommended course of action in dealing with spyware infestations. This presentation will cover diagnosis, repair and immunization of potentially infected operating systems and participants will be offered the chance to engage in the installation and operation of a number of leading spyware management tools.

Technology Partnerships on Campus: The Breeze Model

The Schools of Education, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work have formed a partnership that has allowed us to implement technology that no one school could have done on its own. After a brief demonstration of Breeze Meeting and Presentation technologies, we will review how multiple schools came together to select, purchase, and support a high-end technical solution. We will tell the story of how the partnership was formed, explain how financial and political issues were identified and resolved, summarize lessons learned, and propose strategies for forming new technology partnerships on campus.

Campus Wi-Fi: Status, Futures and Caveats
Jim Gogan, Todd Lane
Jim Gogan and Todd Lane from ITS Telecommunications give a campus update on the status of Wi-Fi wireless networking, what the near-term future holds and why buildings will continue to have wiring installed.
