Electronic Mail Services
Electronic mail, colloquially known as "e-mail," is a familiar component of everyday life. ITS provides a suite of e-mail and related services for use by the campus community.
Primary E-Mail Services
ITS hosts e-mail inboxes for over 50,000 users. With generous quotas and client-independent accessibility, this e-mail service maintains a consistently high susbscription rate among faculty, staff, and students.
The components of this service are:
- IMAP e-mail storage (imap.unc.edu)
- Incoming e-mail gateways (email.unc.edu)
- Outgoing mail servers (smtp.unc.edu)
Bulk Mail Processing (notify.isis.unc.edu)
Adverse weather, public health advisories, and other situations occasionally require that the campus community be informed in a timely manner. E-mail is an increasingly useful vector for this purpose. ITS manages the servers that distribute official University bulk mail.
E-Mail Aliasing
Many of ITS's customers have long-standing relationships with the University, during which time their names and tastes change; hence, so should their e-mail addresses. ITS provides an aliasing service for users of the UNC e-mail system, so that individuals need not be permanently saddled with an ill-chosen youthful address, or tied to the same name as they move through life.
E-Mail Forwarding
Alumni, students traveling abroad, and visiting faculty often need their e-mail to be forwarded to a previously existing or a newly created e-mail account not hosted by UNC. ITS provides an e-mail forwarding service that reroutes mail delivered to "@email.unc.edu" addresses to external sites.
Spam Filtering
ITS provides aggressive spam filtering services to the UNC community, including such measures as:
- Domain Blocking
- Open Relay Blocking
- Personal Spam Filter Service (http://mail.unc.edu/spam)
UNC List Server (listserv.unc.edu)
E-mail lists are a key component of any e-mail system. The UNC List Server hosts over 10,000 lists for UNC affiliates that send over , and provides a web-based interface that can be used to read and post messages.
UNC Webmail (webmail.unc.edu)
The web-based interface to ITS's primary e-mail service is used by over one-third of the campus population daily.
Ancillary Services
- Mail Relaying
- E-Mail Vacation Autoresponder (vacation.unc.edu)
- E-Mail to Pager Gateway (sendpage.unc.edu)
