Introducing the UNC-Chapel Hill Chief Information Security Officer

Interim Chief Information Security OfficerITS is pleased to announce that Kevin Lanning has been selected as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for UNC-Chapel Hill. Kevin has been a valued and respected member of the information technology community at Carolina since 1999, and his appointment as CISO is a testament to both his expertise in IT security and his deep understanding of the information security landscape at Carolina.

The mission of the ITS Information Security Office is to provide a secure computing environment to ensure the availability, integrity and confidentiality of information needed to support the University’s educational and research objectives through the application of a unified information security architecture with the necessary policy and procedure framework to ensure its viability.

For the past eight years, Kevin has worked in the ITS Information Security Office (ISO), where he has successfully navigated numerous functional roles, including IT Manager, Incident Response Manager, Information Security Specialist and, most recently, Interim CISO. Kevin has seen and experienced the changing landscape of information security firsthand at Carolina and his diverse background within the ISO gives him a solid foundation for his new role.

Prior to joining ITS, Kevin worked for seven years in a variety of IT roles for the University Libraries in which he oversaw many key technology changes. Prior to joining Carolina, Kevin worked in the private sector with a focus on risk management and IT infrastructure. 

Kevin has a Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) degree from Carolina. He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and holds the Certified CISO (C|CISO) credential.

All of Kevin’s experience – both at and outside of Carolina – have required him to work in technology environments undergoing rapid and exponential change. Kevin has proven repeatedly his ability to thrive in these situations.  This experience will certainly serve him well in his role as CISO.
