Webmasters meeting

On Thursday, April 5, the UNC-Chapel Hill Webmasters group will meet in Hanes 02 from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Tim Harper, Matt Howell and Jason Morningstar of ITS will present on their experiences with Google maps technology and give tips on how to best integrate it with campus Web sites.

The Webmasters group meets monthly to discuss issues that affect Webmasters across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Any UNC-Chapel Hill faculty or staff interested in participating can join the listserv here.

On-call pay and shift premium pay sheets for biweekly #20 ending Sunday, April 1 will be due to the designated boxes or to the ITS business office no later than 10 a.m. on Monday, April 2.

ITS business office boxes are located in ITS Manning, Giles Horney, the Undergraduate Library, Abernethy Hall, Carr Mill Annex and the Administrative Office Building.

Reed takes new position, Oberlin to serve as interim CIO

Chancellor James Moeser announced today that Dan Reed has been named senior adviser to the chancellor for strategy and innovation and executive director of an expanded RENCI. In these new campus roles, Reed will work with Moeser, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Bernadette Gray-Little, Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development Tony Waldrop and faculty to develop new multidisciplinary research initiatives. Reed will also oversee an expansion of RENCI, which he founded in 2004.

The University will launch a national search to hire a new chief information officer. Until the position is filled, Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology John Oberlin will serve as interim CIO. Prior to his current appointment, Oberlin was executive director for Academic Technology and Networks, which merged with Administrative Information Systems in 2004 to form the current ITS. Control Center manages machinery moves with ease

Last week, Control Center staff moved 38 racks between Phillips Hall, ITS Franklin and ITS Manning. They spent countless hours planning, coordinating and physically moving the equipment, including two full Saturdays. The moves were completed last weekend without a hitch. Continue Reading


CCI load includes Windows XP, Office 2007 and IE 7

Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) computers offered this spring and summer will carry Windows XP, Office 2007 and Internet Explorer 7. Microsoft’s new operating system, Vista, will not initially be available due to concerns that application and driver incompatibilities may adversely affect the ability of students, faculty and staff to carry out their academic work. The CCI Lenovo computers sold this spring and summer, however, will be Vista compatible and students will be offered a free upgrade to Vista in the fall. Continue Reading
