Upgrade propels Topsail into top supercomputing echelon

An upgrade of Topsail, ITS’ Dell research computing cluster, will place it among the top 20 supercomputers worldwide according to the most recent Top500 computer rankings. Currently, Topsail has a computational capability of 6.252 teraflops. With the upgrade, Topsail’s computational capability will exceed 20 teraflops – more than 20 trillion calculations per second. ITS in transition

Due to restructuring, Enterprise Data Management will be integrated into other ITS divisions.

Scientific Database Support and Shared Applications will report to Research Computing. Shared Dataspace, which has been renamed the Enterprise Storage Group, will be headed by Brent Caison and will report to Infrastructure and Operations. Database Administration, Enterprise Data Warehouse and Enterprise Reporting will move to Enterprise Applications. Steve Cornelison, acting assistant vice chancellor, will also move to Enterprise Applications.

On-call pay and shift premium pay sheets for biweekly #16 ending Sunday, Feb. 4 will be due to the designated boxes or to the ITS business office no later than 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 5.

ITS business office boxes are located in Giles Horney, the Undergraduate Library, Phillips Hall, Abernethy Hall, Carr Mill Annex and the Administrative Office Building.

St. John’s IT representatives visit ITS

On Wednesday, Jan. 24, representatives from St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y., visited UNC-Chapel Hill to learn more about ITS programs such as the Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) and to compare notes about services such as IT support, networking and messaging.

ITS power/service outage planned for Jan. 27

On Saturday, Jan. 27, beginning at 7 p.m., all computing systems housed in ITS Franklin will be offline for an estimated 4 hours to allow a reconfiguration of the electrical power distribution in building. Affected systems include all mainframe applications, UNC-Chapel Hill Web sites, the Topsail research computing cluster and mass storage. E-mail will remain available throughout this maintenance.
