John L. Oberlin
John L. Oberlin serves as associate vice chancellor in ITS. Before leading ITS as Interim CIO, Oberlin served as associate vice chancellor for information technology planning and technology assessment and was responsible for the development of the ITS Franklin and ITS Manning buildings.
In his previous position as executive director for UNC-Chapel Hill's Academic Technology and Networks, which merged with Administrative Information Services to form ITS, Oberlin was responsible for managing and supervising all activities of ATN, including the coordination of operations and technology systems and ensuring technology support for the University's instructional mission. Before taking the lead at ATN, Oberlin served as director for finance and planning for the Office of Information Technology, and he also served as project director for the Institute of Academic Technology in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
Oberlin brings to ITS substantial knowledge of academic computing operations as well as experience in networking, telecommunications, and the development and evaluation of IT in an academic environment. He is a well known writer on the financial and economic aspects of IT and has given over 70 talks on the subject at academic computing conferences and universities.
Oberlin earned a B.A. in quantitative economics and decision science from the University of California at San Diego and an M.B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill.
