ITS Communication Technologies (formerly Telecommunications) designs, supports and maintains the production networking and telephony infrastructure for the campus. The group also charts new directions and capabilities for integrated telecommunications and high-speed networking.
Networking is responsible for the operations management of data network on the campus backbone and within all buildings of UNC-Chapel Hill, from the wall plate to the hand off point to the Internet, with the goal of maintaining and evolving a high-performance, high-availability networking environment that will stay ahead of the needs of the faculty, staff, and students in their education, research, administration, and service missions.
Engineering and Operations (E&O) is responsible for all aspects of the University’s voice, video and communications transport infrastructure. The group is responsible for the design, engineering, construction, operation and maintenance of the campus fiber optic network, digital microwave networks, telephony and voice messaging systems, cable television (CATV) and video networks, third-party networks, materials management, and logistics. The group also oversees the campus 3G/4G licensed wireless infrastructure for mobile voice and data. In addition, E&O provides the related customer service support functions for all faculty, staff, students, and vendors.
