ITS Employee Recognition Program
Effective May 1, 2005
Program Goal
The goal of the ITS Employee Recognition Program is to formally honor and recognize ITS staff who have demonstrated excellence and exemplary effort in their job performance.
In addition to awards presented at team and staff meetings during the year, there will be a biannual ITS Employee Recognition event during which the CIO will announce the monthly winners for the previous six months and present certificates and plaques.
Nomination Procedure
ITS Awards nominations should consist of a short description detailing why the employee(s) should receive a Star Heel or On the Spot Award.
Nominations should be submitted by email either through the employee's AVC and/or directly to Nealy Hall at nealy_hall@unc.edu.
All recipients of Star Heel or On the Spot awards will be in the running for the monthly ITS Exemplar Award.

Award Categories
- Star Heel Award (any time)
- UNC-CH Policy only allows Permanent Staff to be a recipient of this award.
- Everyone is eligible to submit a nomination (Permanent, Contractor, Temporary).
- UNC-CH determines how many Star Heel awards ITS may award
- Receipt of a Star Heel award does not exclude receiving an Exemplar or On The Spot Award.
- Star Heel awards may be given whenever deemed appropriate by an AVC.
Star Heel Award includes a $25 Gift Certificate from one of the choices below:
- A Southern Season
- UNC Student Stores
- UNC One Card
- Lowe's Home Improvement
- On The Spot Award (any time)
- ITS will award "Spot" awards to employees demonstrating an act "above and beyond the call of duty"
- All types of ITS employees are eligible (Permanent, Contractor, Temporary).
- Members of campus and ITS employees can make a recommendation to an ITS AVC for someone deserving of an On The Spot Award.
- Receipt of an On The Spot award does not exclude receiving an Exemplar or Star Heel award.
- On The Spot awards may be given whenever deemed appropriate by an AVC.
An On The Spot Award includes a $25 Gift Certificate from one of the choices below:
- A Southern Season
- UNC Student Stores
- UNC One Card
- Lowe's Home Improvement
- Wal-Mart
- Exemplar Award (monthly)
- A monthly award for an ITS employee for exemplary performance.
- All types of ITS employees are eligible (Permanent, Contractor, Temporary).
- Everyone is eligible to submit a nomination.
- Award recipients are determined each month by the ITS Awards Committee, which will be comprised of a delegate from the staff of each Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC).
- Awards are issued by the appropriate AVC once the selection has been made by the ITS Awards Committee.
An Exemplar Award includes a framed certificate/plaque to be formally presented to the individual by the CIO at a semi-annual meeting. An Exemplar Award also includes a $100 gift certificate to one of the following:
- A Southern Season
- UNC Student Stores
- UNC One Card
- Lowe's Home Improvement
- Wal-Mart
- Service Award (annual)
- Presented to ITS employees based upon major employment milestones with the state such a five year, ten year etc.
- These awards are presented in cooperation with the UNC-CH HR department
- Service Awards are presented to the employee by the appropriate AVC during a staff meeting or other event that gives the employee the recognition associated with such an important milestone.
