NOVEMBER WEBMASTERS MEETING
The UNC Webmasters November meeting will feature Richard Powell's presentation "Designing Outside the Browser," a talk he gave to the Refresh the Triangle group. Powell is a freelance web designer working in Chapel Hill. Here is a description of the talk: "As designers, we're constantly looking around for sources of inspiration and influence. Spending all day working on the web, it can be tempting to limit one's gaze to other websites. While many of the challenges we face on the web are unique, in this talk, we'll look beyond the browser window; at the techniques designers in other disciplines have used to solve their unique design problems and how we can apply those lessons to our own work on the web." For more information about Refresh the Triangle, go to http://refreshthetriangle.org/.
When: 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 5, 2009
Where: Graduate Student Center, 211 W. Cameron Ave.
UNC Webmasters meets monthly to discuss issues that affect webmasters across campus. Any UNC-Chapel Hill faculty or staff member interested in participating can attend the meeting and/or join the listserv. For more information go to the Webmasters website at http://webmasters.unc.edu/.
To join the Webmasters mailing list go to http://mail.unc.edu/lists/read/subscribe?name=webmasters.

PROFESSIONAL REPUTATION MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
Books and articles you've written, presentations you've made, your participation in meetings: these are some of the things professional reputations have been built around in the past. How has the Internet changed your ability to know your own professional reputation and what can you do to identify and manage the information about you that might be harming your reputation? Are there ways you can use positive aspects of the Internet to strengthen your reputation? How can you mitigate negative references to you? How do you find references to yourself to even start the process? How can you help your students start monitoring their own reputations early in their careers?
Jim Porto is director of the Executive Master's Program and executive director of the Community Preparedness and Disaster Management Program in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. His current interests include helping faculty manage their reputations given the wealth of online information that is "out there." Join Porto and your colleagues to learn more.
When: 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 6, 2009
Where: Toy Lounge, Dey Hall
To register, go to http://tinyurl.com/itstl110609-unc-edu
This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Faculty Excellence (http://cfe.unc.edu).
DISCIPLINE-RELATED PUZZLES NEEDED
An alternate reality game (ARG) to be played on campus during the spring semester is being planned. For one of the activities in the game, the planners would like to add some discipline-specific puzzles. Items being requested from instructors include crossword puzzles, word searches, riddles, or other fun activities related to a course that college-aged students might be taking. To comply with copyright laws, only send something that can be copied and distributed, either on paper or in electronic format.
For more information on ARGs, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_reality_game and http://www.argn.com/.
For more information about the campus ARG project or to submit materials, contact:
