Course Redesign: Introductory Spanish
- Client: Romance Languages Department
- TL Contact: Bob Henshaw

- Project Began: November 9, 2006
- Project Ends: June 1, 2008
Description: The Romance Languages Department at UNC-Chapel Hill is redesigning its Elementary Spanish 101 and Spanish 102 courses. The Department has had difficulty meeting demand for these courses using the traditional instructional model that is based on four contact hours per week.
During the fall 2007 semester pilot, two of those contact hours shifted to an online setting. One contact hour maintained the traditional instructor-taught format, and the fourth was used for small group conversation sessions led by qualified peer instructors. The results of the year-long pilot will be available at the end of the spring 2008 semester.
ITS-TL is providing technical, project management and assessment support for the project. ITS-TL and the Romance Languages Department secured small support grants from the National Center for Academic Transformation and the UNC Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative to facilitate planning for the redesign.
