ResNET Enhancement Projects

In addition to providing on-site technical support and residential programs, we also manage several services and projects for UNC residents. Every year ResNET coordinates with multiple campus organizations in an effort to increase network awareness, security awareness, keep students and staff informed of the newest technical advances at UNC, and to provide additional services. Below are some of our current projects and development programs.

CCI Printing

ITS Remedy CCI PrintingITS has implemented a remote CCI printing system using the Pharos software. After installing the software, students can print to any CCI Print Station. ResNET RCCs and Housing Community Office staff maintain the residence hall printers, which include keeping it stocked with paper and toner. The supplies are purchased with student fees through Student Government. Any repairs are done by the ITS Classroom Hotline group. ResNET and Housing staff will monitor the printers on a daily basis. The printers are not monitored at all times, so there may be a delay in resolving problems. If you encounter a problem, please visit another location or a computer lab, which does have constant support.

For more details, documentation and links to the software, visit the CCI Printing site. See our Printing Station Map for a list of all sites, including the residence hall locations.

ResTV

ITS and Housing have implemented a new Cable TV service for all residents and campus. This service provides a wide-range of channels, including the High-Definition local network channels. ResNET provides support for any problems related to this service. We can help you configure your TV or HDTV to work with the Cable service. We can also help you install and configure a PC Tuner so you can watch TV on your laptop.

See the Channel Lineup for a complete listing of stations and our CATV FAQs for a list of commonly asked questions.

Digital Signage

ResNET began a pilot program in the fall of 2008 to install Info Screens in residence halls.  The purpose of the screens is to become a digital and dynamic version of the bulletin boards.  We share the space on these screens with Housing and RHA.  Currently, the content is focused on items like a staff directory, event information, and general information about the facility or services available to that residence hall.  In the fall of 2009 we are expanding this service to Hinton James and in the upcoming year we will be implementing a touch screen version of this system.

UNC Webcams

ITS Remedy WebcamCurrently, ResNET manages a camera located in Student Stores so that you can see what is going on in the Pit any time during the day! We also have a camera in the new Student & Academic Services building, overlooking the new south campus "Pit".

For more information visit our UNC Webcams site.

More information on the specific equipment for each location can be found at Classroom Hotline.

ResNet Symposium

ResNet is a national organization dedicated to the advancement and research of residential networking technologies and living-learning environments within academic institutions. Visit the ResNet Symposium website and learn more.

UNC has been involved with the ResNet Symposium in many ways. UNC ResNET has recently updated the National ResNet Directory. This website contains links to academic institutions that have online information about their Residential Computing department or Residential Networking project. Visit the National ResNet Directory.

UNC ResNET has also been involved with the Annual Symposium. Every summer, the ResNet Symposium brings together approximately 300 administrators and specialists who plan, purchase, implement and support residential information technologies at over 150 colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. UNC has recently participated as a Theme Guide. Symposium Theme Guides solicit presentations, evaluate proposals, and make recommendations about which submissions should be included in the program. Theme Guides also follow up with individuals who have submitted presentations to let them know the status of their submission.

CTOPs & TSOPs

Every summer, our Residential Computing Consultants (RCCs) participate in the Carolina Training and Orientation Program (CTOPs) and the Transfer Student Orientation Program (TSOPs). RCCs help incoming students at each CTOPs session with laptop unpackaging, setup and configuration. They educate the incoming students on basic laptop usage and on other ITS Computing services.

Residential Hall Wi-Fi

ResNET funds the installation of all residential hall Wi-Fi access points. A full list can be found here: Wireless Locations. By mid-Fall of 2009 we will have Wi-Fi access in all residence hall "common areas," which include study lounges, lobbies and outside quads. This service is a supplement to the much faster wired connections on campus. We currently have no plan to provide 100% Wi-Fi coverage for all resident rooms, due to the cost of implementing the service (~$1,500 each). For an overview of Wi-Fi and the associated issues, please see our Wireless and Wi-Fi Best Practices and FAQs.

Summer Camps and Conferences

Every summer, ResNET helps provide network and computer set up for multiple technology camps. We also help coordinate the networking support for conferences and other groups in the residence halls.
