ITS Virtual Server Hosting
Technology Overview
Server virtualization is a trend that has the potential to dramatically change the way servers are provisioned, deployed, and monitored. The current best-of-breed technology is called VMWare ESX Server, which continues to evolve to take advantage of new hardware-based virtualization techniques and offers the best set of features. We will continue to evaluate trends and technologies in server virtualization to ensure the highest quality of service.
Current UNC Implementation
ITS-DIS is developing an infrastructure to offer high-performance, flexible, secure, and fault-tolerant server hosting for virtual servers running Windows and Linux. Our infrastructure includes a number of very powerful physical "hotel" servers, which are capable of simultaneously hosting many virtual "guest" servers along with an enterprise-level SAN solution that will be used to host operating system images and virtual disks.
Hosting Support
ITS-DIS provides routine server backup, Network Operating System installation and support at the most current level, system maintenance and upgrades, 24 x 7 automated server monitoring, 24 x 5 on-site operations staff, planned down times for server maintenance, and customer notification of emergency down times. This service relieves the customer department of the burden of maintaining and supporting server hardware on their premises and maintaining technical staffing.
