Basic Security Checklist

Connecting to the internet on a network like UNC's puts your computer at risk for a variety of security related problems. It is critical that you follow these steps to protect your computer from intrusions. Not doing so could result in the loss of your personal information and internet connection.

These are security measures that everyone should take, regardless of what Operating System you are using. READ THESE CAREFULLY.

IMPORTANT: If your computer is maintained by a departmental IT technician, many of these steps may have already been taken.

  • Make sure you have password protected your user account. If you have an administrator account, create a separate account with your user name for every day use. It is easier for hackers to crack passwords on accounts with the user name "Administrator."
  • Make sure all of your passwords are strong. Visit our FAQs page for information on what constitutes a strong password.
  • Never open email attachments unless you know both the sender AND that the person intended to send it to you. Even attachments from people you know could be viruses sent unintentionally. It is always better to be sure before opening one.
  • Never click on links in Instant Messenger unless you know that the person who sent it intended to send it to you. This includes links in instant message windows and links in profiles. Viruses are often spread this way.
  • Download and Install Symantec AntiVirus Client for Windows or Norton AntiVirus for Macs from shareware.unc.edu
