For the second consecutive year, the Information Security Office is proactively warning students about the dangers of illegal file sharing and copyright infringement through an awareness campaign that launched during move-in weekend and will continue through the fall semester.
A series of posters, advertisements and other materials gets the word out that network users would be wise to "Download and share legally." Improper use of peer-to-peer networks puts individual computers at risk and increases the vulnerability of the campus data network.

How many security threats happen in just one year at Carolina? Last year on the UNC-Chapel Hill network, there were 26.6 million security attacks. Thousands of systems were infected with malware and around 1,000 systems isolated for attacking other campus systems and services. This is the incident environment in which ITS Information Security operates.
An incident is an unexpected event that has a suspected or known impact on the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data. ITS Information Security focuses most of their energy on systems that host or process sensitive data or are mission critical systems.
