For his 12th birthday, Chris Florio received a surprise present: an Apple IIgs computer. Within two years, he was the system operator (SysOp) of a Bulletin Board System (BBS). A BBS was one of the precursors of the Internet which allowed users to share, upload and download files via a phone line. At 14 years old, Florio sent echo-mail using the BBS from his house in Connecticut to a friend in San Francisco. It took three days.
“In the late 1980’s the future of technology was not as obvious as it became in the ‘90’s. But my mother really saw the value of nurturing my interest in computers. She recognized that it would be a good skill in the long run,” said Florio. “My dad was a fireman, my mom a schoolteacher. My first computer represented big money to them. I was very lucky.”
