What’s up with ITS Teaching and Learning Interactive?

This fall has been a busy one for ITS Teaching and Learning Interactive (TLI).

TLI recently completed work on four multimedia modules for the UNC Institute on Aging. The Institute is based at UNC-Chapel Hill but is a state-wide organization. Faculty members who served as content experts for the modules hailed from numerous universities across the 17-campus system. The modules, each of which is approximately 20 minutes in length, provide continuing education and professional development on the following topics: dementia, successful aging, financial resources in retirement, and evidenced-based program development.  Participants can print a completion certificate for their records after finishing a module and passing a quiz.

Work continues on two prototype courses that TLI is creating for the UNC Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC). The first course, Taking Action to Make Your Neighborhood Safe and Walkable, focuses on Pedestrian Safety and is part of a larger plan to replace and supplement on-site training with online materials. The second course, Buckle Up to Grow Up, is an outreach effort that provides car seat information to parents across the nation. Both courses will eventually be integrated into the HSRC Training Academy.

At the end of October members of ITS Teaching and Learning and ITS-TLI presented at a Triangle Instructional Technology (Tri-IT) meeting held at Duke University. TLI Manager Kim Eke led a discussion on the challenges and opportunities associated with learning management systems on college campuses, while Megan R. Bell, Larissa Biggers, Andy Brawn, Kristin Hondros, and Tim Harper explained the varied skill sets that are involved in multimedia course design. Tri-IT, which meets bi-annually, provides an informal forum for instructional technologists across central North Carolina to share ideas. Participating universities include Duke University, Elon University, NC State University, NC Central University, NC A&T University, East Carolina University, UNC-Greensboro, and UNC-Chapel Hill. The next meeting will be held in the spring.

Looking to the future, Megan R. Bell and Larissa Biggers will have an article published by the E-Learning Guild in late November. The article discusses instructional media production, with a special emphasis on a solution TLI created for the UNC-CH School of Nursing.

Teaching & Learning Interactive (TLI) is dedicated to the design, development, delivery and support of innovative educational products and services that meet the instructional goals at Carolina.
