Service Monitoring (Control Center)

What is the Control Center?

The Control Center is responsible for the day-to-day management of the central computer and networking hardware facilities. By monitoring these systems and devices the Control Center is able to ensure that all equipment is fully functional and responsive to user needs. The Control Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There is always a human presence in the Control Center, and this schedule is maintained by three rotating shifts.

Among other things, the Control Center is constantly monitoring for:

  • Excessively high use of data/video links across campus
  • Switch malfunctions or abnormalities
  • Email queueing and delivery effectiveness
  • Incoming call volume and average hold time
  • Environmental condition deviations in the computer room
  • Physical and system security
  • Disk and CPU utilization, load, number of jobs, and other parameters to indicate system performance
