Iron Mountain backup solution reaches thousand-user mark

This month, more than 1,000 people used the desktop backup solution offered by ITS to University faculty and staff. This milestone coincided with the announcement that the service will switch to more convenient annual billing in July. Previously, departments have been billed monthly.

Campus Webmasters meeting July 6

Carolina Computing Initiative to release RFP July 1

The Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) will release a Request for Proposals to primary manufacturers of personal computers July 1. The current contract with IBM is set to expire this summer. CCI requires all undergraduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill to own a laptop computer that meets or exceeds the minimum specifications for their class. All incoming undergraduate and graduate students can purchase an authorized computer model through the CCI program. "We plan to select a vendor that recognizes the growing importance of mobile computing in higher education," says Charlie Green, assistant vice chancellor for Teaching and Learning. "We are seeking a vendor committed to not only meeting the current computing needs of our community, but to helping us anticipate evolving computing needs as well." The designated vendor will be announced Oct. 1, 2006.

ITS Communications redesigns CTC Web site

ITS Communications has redesigned the Carolina Technology Consultants (CTC) Web site to more effectively communicate the group's information. Besides the design change, new features include:
  • A search engine
  • A section for book reviews
  • New technical resources
  • An organized event archive
The CTC is a cooperative organization of professional computer support providers at UNC-Chapel Hill and is backed by the resources of Information Technology Services. Its purpose is to create a forum for problem-solving and professional development and to encourage the sharing of information between information technology organizations and departments.
