About CarolinaContent
In the fall of 2007, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill began a process to identify an enterprise-wide content management solution to support the central management of multiple Web sites across the campus. In May 2008, a campus committee selected Oracle’s Universal Content Management (UCM).
Information Technology Services (ITS) has been tasked with implementing UCM and facilitating the introduction and adoption of enterprise Web content and document management for the University. The first phase of CarolinaContent is focused on learning about the concepts of enterprise Web content management and document management in preparation for the implementation of UCM at Carolina. ITS has engaged Oracle consultants to guide the team through an intense training process and an implementation strategy that will test the team’s learning by migrating the current ITS Web site and Help site into the UCM.
One of the goals in this first phase is to identify areas of the current service model that will have to change as ITS moves from providing Web design and development services to supporting an enterprise-class application. The second phase of the project, scheduled to begin in the spring, will focus on champion projects. This will allow ITS to slowly bring sites into the UCM, using a measured approach to help strengthen the team’s knowledge of the technology and support the continued development of a service model. During phase II of the project, ITS Web Services plans to migrate and build new sites in the UCM for selected key campus administrative units, including the main University Web site.
Enterprise document management is a component of these efforts but the scope of the implementation is narrowly focused on meeting document management needs for project Web sites. In more simple terms, document management functionality is currently limited to the publishing of documents online for public consumption.
CarolinaContent will provide the University with a scalable, centralized solution for managing Web sites - one that offers flexibility as well as consistency for architecture, security and branding. Campus units will have access to a process for creating and maintaining sites that is easy to use, cost effective and efficient. Users will be able to add, modify or delete content with standard desktop applications like Microsoft Office. No knowledge of HTML is required. CarolinaContent will deliver a Web content management solution that reduces development and maintenance costs and allows the University to maintain accurate, timely and current Web content with consistent branding and presentation across all campus sites.
