Yesterday morning, the Blackboard database started to experience problems that worsened as the day progressed. That evening the system became unresponsive and ITS opened a critical ticket with Blackboard Inc. Today April 18th, ITS has been working on the system to implement changes in the database as recommended by Blackboard. As this work continues tonight, users will keep experiencing sluggish or unresponsive connections possibly follow by complete outages.
If there is no evidence of improvement once this work is completed tonight, ITSÂ will continue to work with Blackboard to find the cause of the problem.

During this time, ITS will be implementing some changes on the database following recommendations by Blackboard Inc, in order to try to alleviate some of the problems that we have been experiencing recently. During the rest of the day users might experience significant slowdowns and intermittent outages.

If you were using Blackboard yesterday between 12 noon and 3 p.m., and you experienced sluggish and unresponsive connections, please note that this problem was not caused by the Blackboard application. The source of the problem was a web application whose database is hosted in the same server as the Blackboard’s database. This application was demanding far too many resources and caused the databases in that server to be unresponsive.

During this time ITS will try to relocate the Database server that hosts the Blackboard Database, see detailed information at
Service outages planned for Good Friday.
Because of the complexity of this move, this downtime might need to be extended until Saturday, April 7
th 2007 at 4 p.m. For this reason,
we recommend you download/make a copy of your Gradebook or any other information you might need immediate access to in the event that the downtime takes longer than the time estimated.
Note that UNC-CH has recently made available "bFree" a course extractor tool that makes a stand-alone website from export or archive files of Blackboard sites. The generated website does not include students’ information. To learn and download this tool please see
